Former Cancun Mayor Escapes House Arrest

Carlos Canabal Ruiz, former mayor of Cancun, Quintana-Roo, from 2004 to 2005, fled from his home arrest, where he had been since December 2024 in San-Pedro-Garcia-Garsia, Nuevo-Leon. He was charged with administrative fraud amounting to over 531 million pesos to the detriment of the companies LV S.A. de C.V. and Inteligencia México S.A. de C.V., engaged in waste collection in Cancun.

Canabal Ruiz was arrested on February 9, 2024, in Tulum, Quintana-Roo, and was under surveillance at the North Social Reintegration Center Apodaca, Nuevo-Leon. Subsequently, in October 2024, he was transferred to the University Hospital of Monterrey due to alleged health problems. In December of that same year, a judge from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, granted qualified assistance for being found in his home address, where he was found with an electronic bracelet.

After the statement of the official representative of the company LV S.A. de C.V., lawyer Javier Olea Trujillo, regarding the charges against various agents who protected Carlos Canabal, he stated his intention to file complaints against the federal judges who granted refuge to the fugitive. According to him, the changes in security measures facilitated the escape of the former mayor.

At this moment, starting from April 26, the General Prosecutor's Office of Nuevo-Leon has not expressed its opinion on this matter.
